Christian Weli strike sinks MFM FC in Port Harcourt.
Rivers United breeze past MFM FC of Lagos in a reschedule Npfl match day 28 fixture at the Yakubu Gowon stadium in Port Harcourt.
The pride of Rivers who lost their last three matches at a stretch, started the match on an attacking note, becoming a thorn in the flesh of the visitors defence and forcing great saves from the the goal keeper, Ayobami Folarin.
Following the series of attack coming from the home side, the visitors couldn’t curtail it at some point which resulted to the hacking down of Bernard Ovoke in the the visitors box in the 5′ minutes, the center referee pointed to the spot, Bernard Ovoke popped up to take it, shoot straight to the goal keeper who saved the spot kicked.
In the 12th minutes, Ovoke and Guy Kuemian exchanged passes sublimely in the visitor’s half, but the later dragged his effort a bit wide.
Six minutes later, The league leading goal scorer, Stephen Odey benefited from Olatunbosun Sikiru cross to head into the home side goal post but Femi Thomas read the danger very well.
Ayobami Folarin was forced to save what could have been the best goal of the season so far when Bernard Ovoke turned in a bicycle kick just 14 yards from the visitor’s goal post in the 26th minutes.
Two minutes later, Rivers United took the lead through Christian Weli close finish from a close range following a poor clearance of throw in by the ‘Church boys’ defenders.
The prayer boys never allow the goal to deter them, this time a well planned counter attack was initiated, Onuwa Chukwuka set up Stephen Odey but Femi Thomas quick and timely interference ensures the ball is parried away for a corner kick. Rivers United went into the the first half break with a 1-0 lead.
On resumption of play in the second half, the ‘Church boys’ took the pride of Rivers with a storm, Stanley Okorom and Onuwa Chukwuka combined beautifully in the the midfield, the later delivers a deadly pass to the Okorom whose wonderful strike from a close range went just a little wide.
Bolaji Sakin immediately he was introduced in the 69th minutes benefited from a wrong pass by the visitors to initiate another fantastic counter attack, he set up Guy Kuemian but MFM defence kept the Ivorian at bay.
The game continued slowly till the end.
This win now means Rivers United now moved to 14th place on the Npfl log with two more outstanding matches to play.
